“We originally projected to sell 600,000 for this year but reception to the product has been overwhelming. We will definitely do more than our original projections.”

“Since we believe that every Filipino home should be able to enjoy digital viewing, we endeavored to come up with a quality product that is accessible to the majority of TV viewing homes.”

Walang pasok kahit online classes

“In case of online classes or tinatawag na blended learning, ‘pag may bagyo, posibleng kailangan ihanda ng mga pamilya ang kanilang bahay… apektado sila by blackouts or by intermittent signal ng mga internet service provider.”

Nahihirapan sa pag aaral | Image from Unsplash

Ayon pa kay Professor Jaana Viljaranta mula University of Eastern Finland, “Compared to daycare, kindergarten introduces children to a more structured learning environment. The experiences children gain in this environment may have long-term consequences on the development of their academic motivation and competencies. Therefore, it is essential that our teachers are aware of the power their interaction with children may have, and that they are supported in finding optimal ways to interact with each child, while taking individual strengths and needs into consideration,”

3. Bonding time

TIME Magazine First Kid of the Year: Scientist Gitanjali Rao

TIME Magazine has been known to feature some extraordinary people on their covers, and their latest one is no different. Meet Scientist Gitanjali Rao, recipient of TIME Magazine’s first ever Kid of the Year cover.

Who Run the World?

It seems that kids are. Time Magazine’s recipient of Person of the Year cover was none other than teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg.  We are seeing that the world is coming to recognize, and rightly so, kids and teenagers that are trying to help shape the world that they will be adults in. This is not only promising but inspiring as well.

For the first time ever: Kid of the year

For 2020, it seems that Time magazine has recognized this phenomenon by creating a cover for kids themselves. They have named Gitanjali Rao the first ever TIME Magazine’s First Kid of the Year and rightly so.

Gitanjali Rao is a scientist who has created a mobile app to test drinking water for traces of lead levels. She is cited to be able to turn scientific theories into real life solutions. The application has far reaching capabilities and can be scaled to other areas in the world that are still trying to access clean and drinkable water.

Not her first

This is not the first time 15 year old Rao’s achievements have been lauded. Before being named TIME Magazine First Kid of the Year, in 2019 she made the Forbes list of 30 Under 30. In 2017, when she was 11 years old, she won attention and praise in Flint, Michigan in the United States for making a device called Tehys. This device uses carbon nanotube sensors that can detect lead levels in water. This is especially needed in the ongoing battle happening in the state for drinkable water. Not only this, but in seventh grade, she was named America’s Top Young Scientist. She collaborated with scientists in the water industry hoping to get the device on the market.

Her more recent achievement is that she has developed a mobile and web based tool that helps detect any trace of cyberbullying. Using artificial technology, this application can help children that are increasingly online and on gadgets to steer clear from harmful content.

She explains how the technology works in the interview with Time Magazine, Rao says; “You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able to pick it up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the option to edit it or send it the way it is. The goal is not to punish. As a teenager, I know teenagers tend to lash out sometimes. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.”

Time Magazine’s Kid of the Year nominees: In Good Company

Scientist Gitanjali Rao is in good company with this recognition. The other nominees are also kids under the age of 18 that are trying to make the world a better place. The other nominees are Tyler Gordon, 14, from San Jose, California an artist that recently painted the portraits of Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris; Jordan Reeves, 14, from Columbia, Montana, who helps run a non profit called Born Just Right making prosthetics for disabled children (like herself); Bellen Woodard, 10, from Leesburg, Virginia who is changing the conversation about skin color; and Ian McKenna, 16, from Austin, Texas who is a self taught gardener with the aim of raising awareness about hunger. 7 benefits of writing by hand and how it makes children smarter

$

In an age where laptops and tablets have taken centerstage, writing by hand is fast becoming a primitive practice. Digital devices have made typing the more conventional method to log notes and data.
Mababasa sa artikulong ito:

But new research shows that handwriting is an essential skill and has several benefits. From helping children improve their memory, to boosting their creativity, writing by hand is a key developmental skill for children.

Writing by hand: How it benefits your children

writing by hand

Writing by hand helps your kids to express their feelings better. Image courtesy: iStockphoto

1) Relieves stress, depression, and anxiety

Writing by hand increases activity in parts of the brain that are similar to meditation. In fact, studies reveal that writing about a stressful experience can lead to more therapeutic benefits such as act as a stress reliever and combat depressive thoughts.
When you write about your feelings everyday for 15 to 30 minutes, it can lead to measurable physical and mental health benefits. Studies call this the writing cure.

2) Improves focus

If you find your child to be distracted and having difficulty concentrating, try a few hand writing exercises. These include cursive writing, penning their thoughts, or simply drawing or writing a few sentences on a notepad.
Writing by hand not only helps children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD), it also helps kids improve their concentration, in general. This is because the process of writing uses a particular part of the brain that acts as a filter. It blocks any irrelevant information and pushed out only the part that the writer needs to understand.

3) Improves hand-eye coordination

Writing by hand is also a great way to improve the hand-eye coordination of your child. The coordination is different for every letter, so the movements are different. It is more mentally demanding than hitting a button for each letter on a keyboard.

4) Helps to express better

Sometimes, you will find that your child will struggle to convey a certain feeling or expression. But, he or she can communicate better when they have the pen and paper in front of them.
Writing by hand helps to avoid that tongue-tied feeling and teaches you the art of fleshing out your thoughts carefully.

5) Stimulates your brain

Writing by hand uses more of your brain and integrates thinking, movement, and sensation. It promotes deeper encoding of new information in ways that keyboard typing doesn’t.
It can also improve a person’s memory and help hold on to newer information for a longer period. Handwriting thus involves rich sensory-motor experiences that help stimulate your child’s brain. This is why it is often a go-to method of learning and memorising.

6) Boosts creativity

Writing by hand helps you think outside the box. It gives you a space to express yourself better and provide avenues in which you can convey the same thing differently.
It also helps one go through their thoughts over and over. One study even proves that children assigned to write essays by hand were found to express more ideas than those typing on keyboard.

7) Improves memory

We have all tried this technique when we were school-going children. Whenever we faced difficulty in memorising a difficult chapter, we wrote it down. This simplified our doubts and helped us understand concepts better. As parents, you can use the same technique with your children too.

Researchers note that a physical activity like writing by hand uses nerves and muscles in a complex way. It sends sensory feedback to our brains. The more complex the feedback, the easier our brain retains memories.

Keeping in mind the numerous benefits of writing, encouraging your child to write instead of typing can certainly go a long way. But if you’re struggling to get your child off the laptop, here are some tips to help you get started.

How to get your child to write more

Make it fun

Children love any task that is fun, so naturally it is a good idea to make a writing exercise fun too. You can play word games with them. For instance, take two white sheets. Use one and give your child another one. Make four columns in both the sheets- Name, Place, Animal and Thing. Now, begin with alphabets one after the other and ask your child to stop you wherever he/she wishes.

Say, for instance, you stopped at alphabet ‘E.’ Now, both of you will have to fill each of the columns with words starting with ‘E.’ If you are the first one to complete the exercise, you will win the points.

Encourage diary writing

You can encourage your kids to wear their thinking cap by urging them to pen down their thoughts. Gift them colourful pens and a writing pad, and ask them to get started.
Ask your kids to write positive affirmations, or fill in a gratitude book everyday. They can choose to journal their day for 15-30 minutes. This practice will help them to articulate their feelings and express themselves better.

Ask them to write short stories

This is a great way to improve your child’s creative writing skills. Encourage them to write short stories. They can even cut out pictures from a magazine with different characters or locations, or choose to write down different words.
You can then place these in a container or glue them to cards to use as writing prompts. This can be a great bonding exercise for the entire family.

Show them the positive side of technology, too

writing by hand

As parents, you can should also help your child identify the positive side of technology. For instance, if you find them interested in writing and expressing their thoughts, encourage them to start a blog. This will allow them to share their thoughts with others as well.

Writing by hand is an important practical life skill. Most generations still vouch for the effectiveness of this conventional method of expression and learning. Yes, it requires time and patience, but it also instills these virtues in your children.

Nakikita ko ang struggle nila to the point na they even scold their child kasi nga hindi interesado or more on laro pa si baby. And I want to share this experience of mine with my son.

I started teaching my son nursery rhymes at the age of 1 year old. Bago siya mag 2 years old doon ko na rin paunti-unting inintroduce ang Letters and Numbers.

Kaya at the age of 2 years old kabisado na niya kahit jumbled pa. My son is communication delay until now.

I enroll my son year 2019 he was 4 years old that time.

I mean nakakapagsalita siya.

Pandemic 2020, walang school. After that it’s up to you.

He is now turning 6 years old. And I think isa rin sa mga factor na nakapagpa engganyo sa kanya because nakikita niya ako magdrawing.

I have a talent sa pagdodrawing minsan kinukuha talaga ako ng teacher niya to make posters and even hire me to paint school’s wall and lagi ko siya kasama that time.

1. Maging patient

Ang anak natin ay may kaniya-kanyang galing. Hindi man nagpapakita ngayon.

2. Huwag kang susuko

Huwag mapapagod turuan ang anak. Mahirap man kakayanin natin ‘yan. Kaya chill and relax lang mommy.

Larawan mula sa author

3. Huwag mong ikumpara ang anak mo

Iba-iba ang bata. They shine when it’s their time.

Kaya mommies. LABAN LANG! Dadating ang panahon ni baby. Hayaan mo lang siya mag-explore. Eventually matututo ‘yan on their own.

Struggles of teaching during the pandemic: “Sometimes we can’t teach our own children because we’re too busy printing modules for our students.”

When the pandemic hit and disrupted how our education system works, the teachers were the ones who had the brunt of the burdens of distance learning. Read this teacher’s point of view on the struggles of eLearning, for educators and students alike.
What can you read in this article?
  • The struggles of eLearning, from the point of view of a teacher
  • As a parent, would she prefer face-to-face classes or eLearning for her kids?
When it comes to children’s education, the model has been pretty straightforward. Up until the early 2000s, education was in a classroom of students with a teacher who led the process. Physical presence was a no-brainer, and any other type of learning was questionable at best. Then the internet happened, and the rest is history.

eLearning, the new normal

Electronic learning or eLearning is utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom.  In most cases, it refers to a course, program or degree delivered completely online.

If you can maintain the necessary self-discipline, the benefits of eLearning are almost too numerous to count. You can cover the material when you have time, go over it as often as you need, all without traveling to the classroom.
There have been many studies showing that eLearning students retain the material to a significantly greater degree than face-to-face instructor-led classes.
However, while our students (who were born in the age of the internet), can easily adapt to this style of learning, it wasn’t that easy for teachers like me.
As a teacher conducting eLearning, I must say it is very hard because we were trained for many years to do face-to-face learning. But with the help of the different pieces of training that the Department of Education (DepEd) conducted, we slowly learned how to handle lessons and students during this type of learning.
This pandemic taught us a lot of things, especially accepting that we are now in the technology age. That a teacher must know how to operate and manipulate gadgets to go with the flow with the new normal in education.
struggles of eLearning

Struggles of eLearning

We also encountered a lot of problems with this kind of learning. Here are some of them:
  • Lack of materials

This is one of the biggest problems, especially in public schools.  Sometimes we provide the needed materials from our own pockets. Because as a teacher, we took an oath to help our students, even if it means we need to spend our own money sometimes to help them.

  • Inability to track student’s competency

Another problem is that we cannot track the status of the ability of our pupils. We cannot completely measure their capacity in learning, how they read, or how they answer their learning modules.

  • More time spent on eLearning than face-to-face classes.

As a newbie in this kind of class setup, one of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced is overcoming technical difficulties in the online teaching tools. Despite being an educator for eight years, I had to learn the ropes in teaching my students through eLearning.
Also, being a teacher and a mom is even more challenging in this setup. Sometimes we do not have time to teach our own children anymore because we are too busy printing modules and preparing the needs of our students.

Traditional learning or face-to-face is expensive, yes, because you need to give allowance to your children, spend extra money for projects for every subject and that takes a long time. Just like in distance learning, the results can vary as well.
On the other hand, the importance of eLearning is now a given fact and it can offer an alternative that is much faster, cheaper, and in the opinion of others, potentially better than learning physically in the classroom.
But everything in this world has its pros and cons. For each type of learning, there can be positive or negative impacts, also depending on the type of student.
As a parent, if I had a choice, I would prefer my children to learn through face-to-face classes because they can explore more and develop more skills that way.
But whether they’re in physical schools or online classes, what’s important is that we do our best as teachers or parents to help our children learn and adopt and adapt to what is the new normal now.
We need to help them build their own future and achieve what they want and what will make them happy individuals. And the most important thing is for them to learn more and achieve their goals with your support as a teacher-parent.

6 play-based learning activities to try

Struggling to teach your child at home? Read Mommy Lovely’s account of how play-based learning works for her family while in this pandemic.

What can you read in this article?

  • How Mommy Lovely brought Antarctica into her home
  • Ways to incorporate play-based learning at home

The best memories of my early childhood are experiences such as playing in the rain, my first bite of strawberry during a trip to Baguio when I was about 4 years old and bike rides with my siblings around the neighborhood.

It is why I know that fun times are the ones that stick and stay with you forever. I want my kids to have a childhood like mine or maybe even better, even in this time of pandemic.

As a homeschooling mom who is very involved in my children’s education, and considering that play-based learning is beneficial for them, I find ways to incorporate learning with fun activities we can do at home.

I try my best to keep their days gadget-free and keep their hands busy because I am a believer of what Maria Montessori said, “What the hand does the mind remembers”.

Can’t travel? Not a problem

play-based learning

Image from author

During the early part of the first nationwide lockdown, my eldest showed interest in continents specifically Antarctica. Though we could not travel, I told my kids we were going on a trip and asked them to wear winter clothes and printed play passports for them.

I then transformed their study room to Antarctica with penguin plushies they already had, white snow blankets, and full blast air conditioning.

As they entered the room, they were transported to the continent with fun facts and a short video of the ice-covered landmass. The joy in their eyes was just the same as when we actually traveled to another country pre-pandemic.

Another time I told them we were going for an adventure and asked them to pack their camera, water and pretend map.

I took them out to our yard and had them use their imagination pretending they were in the woods and I was amazed at how they brought themselves to a different place with their creativity .

Our blue ternate plant became a tree full of blue jays, a hanging plastic sheet became a waterfall and the picnic mat a lake.

It is both rewarding and a blessing, for you and your kids, to join in on their adventure and see the world through their eyes.

I encourage them to observe and notice even the tiniest weeds and insects or the most mundane things such as a dry leaf that can be found in our garden and ask them questions to stimulate their little minds.

Here are the things that we did:

  • One time, they saw a caterpillar and began asking about it. So we decided to take care of one and made a screened home for it. I let them feed and check it every day until it hid in a cocoon and became a butterfly. It was the best way to teach them about life cycles and metamorphosis because the unique experience makes them remember.
  • On some days we just lie on the mat and stare at the sky. And, I teach them about clouds or parts of the tree or constellations at night or play with the garden hose. Allow them to be wet and messy, and let them discover things like light plus water creates rainbows. I make every effort to give them even just a simple background of the things around them.

  • Sometimes we cook or bake and I tell them about fractions when measuring and reading the recipe. We plant vegetables and watch them grow or they sit with their dad and rummage through his toolbox while naming and learning the uses of the different kinds of tools. Even be as simple as handing them a box of chalk to write and draw on the pavement.
  • If we choose to stay indoors, we read books, paint, do crafts, play dress up and play game boards like our DIY sight word game. So we have fun while my little girl is learning to read. I also allow a lot of time for free play.
  • Occasionally, they get to watch their favorite cartoon when mommy and daddy are too busy. Sunday movie nights are also something they look forward to. The beauty of homeschooling is finding opportunities to learn anytime anywhere and in any way.
  • I also enrolled them in monthly zoom class programs so they get to talk to kids their age.

Of course, we have workbook days but I try my best to incorporate fun activities for them as much as I can. Because this is also a stressful time for them.

Not fully understanding what the virus is, though I have explained to them, their innocence cannot fully grasp why and how this is happening. Now, more than ever, is not time to pressure them to learn.

How to know if your child is not ready for preschool? Find out what the 7 signs are here.

What can you read in this article?

  • Preschool readiness qualities
  • How to know if your child is not ready for preschool
  • Tips on preparing your toddler for school

As much as we want them to be our babies forever, we have to let our children go out into the world and the first step in doing this is enrolling them in school.

But how do we know if it’s the right time for them to start school? How do we know that we’re not rushing them and getting ahead of ourselves?

Preschool readiness qualities

Preschool readiness is a term that refers to whether a child is ready or able to easily transition to school. It involves

“My child knows his ABCs, and can count from 1 to 20. Does that mean he’s ready for school?”

Contrary to popular belief, preschool readiness is not all about academic skills like reading and writing.

According to Leon Hoffman, a psychoanalyst and executive director of the Bernard L. Pacella, MD, Parent Child Center in New York, the best indicator of whether a child is ready for preschool is socialization.

“If he or she really loves to be with other kids, has the capacity to socialize and separate from Mom, your child may well be ready.”

According to Kid Sense.org, here are some skills that a child should possess to determine that he is ready for school. Parents, you can ask yourself these questions to assess if your child is indeed ready for preschool.

  • Self-regulation: Is he able to control his emotions?
  • Receptive language (understanding): Can he understand or follow simple instructions?
  • Expressive language and articulation (using language): Can he express his emotions and communicate what he wants?
  • Executive functioning: Can he pay attention, follow a routine and organize his thoughts?
  • Emotional development/regulation: Can he tell when a person is sad or happy?
  • Social skills: Can he play well with other kids? Does he know how to share?

How to know if your child is NOT yet ready for preschool?

According to Hoffman, it’s important that your child is ready for preschool because starting school too soon can be stressful (even traumatic, if his parents force him to go) for a child.

Here are some signs that might tell you that your child is not yet ready for school.

how to know if your child is not ready for preschool

1. He’s having trouble being separated from you.

Separation anxiety may very well be the most common problem among kids who are about to start school. I remember sitting in my daughter’s nursery class for a few days because she would just cry the moment I leave the room.

Hoffman said that if the child feels anxious about being away from his parents, then it might probably do more harm than good.

“If your child is uncomfortable separating from you at age two or three, you should not force the child to attend preschool,” he added.

Gail Saltz, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell School of Medicine in New York City agrees.

“If your child is not ready for separation, preschool will backfire.”

How do you know if your child has separation anxiety? If your child is in distress each moment you leave the room or say goodbye to him, then he probably has it.

2. He’s not yet potty-trained.

One policy that most preschools have before accepting students is they have to know how to use the toilet, or at least, should not be wearing diapers anymore.

Accidents happen and preschool teachers expect that, but if your child still doesn’t know how to use the bathroom, maybe you should work on that first before sending him to school.

Saltz said,

“In my opinion, it creates anxiety for kids, because other kids aren’t in diapers — and teachers don’t want to change diapers.”

3. He can’t follow simple instructions.

Another important quality in preschool readiness is the ability of the child to understand simple instructions. If your child cannot respond to two-step instructions (For example, “Get your book and sit on the floor”) yet, then maybe he needs more practice in this area before you enroll him.

4. He can be easily overwhelmed.

The first few days in preschool can only be described as chaos. There will be a lot of noise, activities, and mess as some kids are still trying to get used to having a routine.

If you feel that your child won’t be able to adapt or control his emotions in this scenario, then it might mean that he needs to learn how to self-regulate first before starting preschool.

“If you have an easily overwhelmed kid who is uncomfortable with music, laughing, and transitioning from one thing to the next, you just might want to put them in some classes — and not have it be an all-day experience like preschool,” said Saltz.

5. He’s not used to interacting with other kids yet.

Preschool is where kids practice sharing, taking turns, and cooperation. Sure, there will be moments where they will have some trouble with sharing or have a “This is mine!” phase, but if your child is still having a hard time getting along with other kids (like pushing, hitting, or grabbing toys without permission), he might need to practice his social skills at home first.

6. You think he won’t be able to handle the school schedule.

Here in the Philippines, preschool classes usually last for 2 to 3 hours long. If you feel that your “baby” will not be able to wake up early in the morning to go to school, then that could mean he’s not yet ready to follow a more rigorous schedule or routine in class.

7. He’s not yet able to communicate clearly.

While kids do not have to know a certain number of words to be accepted into preschool, they should at least be able to express themselves and communicate with others.

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, between ages 3 to 4, kids should be able to answer simple who, what and where questions, put four words together in a sentence and can be easily understood when they talk.

If your child is still having a hard time communicating, you can consult your pediatrician first and ask if your child needs to be assessed for speech delay before enrolling him in preschool.

Help your child get ready for preschool

If you feel that your child is not yet ready for preschool, don’t fret. Here are some tips that can help you and your child have a smoother transition to school.

  • Establish a simple routine at home a few weeks before school starts. For example, waking up around the same time every day, eating breakfast, and getting dressed before she can play.
  • Help your child become more independent by encouraging him to get dressed by himself, fix his own breakfast (he’ll manage if it’s just cereal and milk), get his own glass of water or go to the bathroom by himself.
  • Play pretend school. Set up a mini-classroom at home where you can be the pretend teacher. You can also switch roles sometimes and you as the pretend student can model positive behavior to your child.
  • You can also sign her up for preschool readiness classes or trial classes before enrolling her in preschool.
  • Teach him responsibility by giving him some tasks at home such as putting his toys away after playing with them or watering the plants in the afternoon.
  • Let him play and socialize with other kids in your area. Arrange play dates with other children (you can do this online if physical play dates are out of the question).
  • You can also do some play-based learning activities at home to stimulate your child’s curiosity and eagerness to learn.
  • To ease separation anxiety, try leaving your child for short periods of time with friends or relatives while you go out. Assure him that you will return and that he is safe with others.
  • Get your child excited about school. Tell stories about when you went to school and how much fun you had.

“I advise parents to talk to their kids about what will happen in preschool, what they will do, how much fun it will be, and how many friends they will make,” Saltz says. “It’s about getting your child to have a positive attitude about preschool.”

Remember, kids thrive when they are ready. Ask yourself if your child is really ready to start school. If not, waiting one more year won’t hurt, as long as you commit to preparing him while staying at home.

And the best way to prepare your child for school is by teaching him skills that will enable him to be independent, patient, and adaptable.

What can you read in this article?

  • DepEd’s K to 12 program
  • Common requirements for preschool
  • List of preschools in  Manila.

Soon enough, Summer will end and enrollment will be just right around the corner. Enrolling our children to the best school is our duty as parents because we want to ensure that they grow into loving and well-educated children.

The first step is preschool

As part of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K to 12 program, all children in the country are required to undergo a year in kindergarten before they can enter grade 1 or the elementary program.

Studies show that children who go to preschool are better equipped and can adjust better when they start primary school.

The minimum age requirement for kindergarten or kinder is 5 years old, however, some parents prefer to enroll their children to pre-kindergarten or pre-K (also called nursery) as early as age 3.

In Kinder, students learn about the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and colors through games, songs, and dances. It’s also in preschool where they hone their motor, cognitive and social skills.

Requirements for preschool

If you plan on enrolling your child in preschool this coming school year, here are some of the documents you need to prepare:

  • Birth Certificate (both original and clear photocopy)
  • Baptismal Certificate (clear photocopy)
  • Parents’ Marriage Contract (clear photocopy)
  • Pictures (size: 1×1) for the IDs
  • Parents’ photocopy of 2 Valid IDs
  • Accomplished application form from the school

Note that these documents may change depending on the requirements of the school.

As much as we want to keep them as our babies forever, our kids have to grow up and attend school eventually, and preschool is where a child’s academic journey begins.

It’s in preschool where our children learn routines and practice their cognitive and social skills, which is why it’s really important for us to find a school where our child will thrive and will feel comfortable enough to learn and explore.

Preschool requirements

Before you start your search for the best preschool for your child, you have to make sure that he or she is ready to start school.

Along with that, it’s also a good idea to prepare the following requirements to facilitate your child’s enrollment.

  • Birth certificate of the child
  • Baptismal Certificate (for Catholic schools)
  • Marriage Certificate (unless single parent or not married)
  • 1×1 photo of child
  • Accomplished Application Form from school
  • Other requirements from the school

How to choose a school that is right for your child?

Parents should choose a preschool based on the quality of the teachers, the policy enforced by the preschool director, resources, the overall environment, and fit for your child, not so much on its written education philosophy.

Oftentimes, when you talk to preschool directors, you will find that they like to emphasize their education method.Parents are therefore led to believe that they should pick the right preschool based on the marketed philosophy.

However, preschools do not need any accreditation to use the names of those education methods. Subscribing to philosophy does not guarantee it will deliver the same type or the same quality across the board.

Your child’s experience will mostly be shaped by the teachers, the environment, and the policies of the preschool.

It is more important to understand how the teachers are interpreting and incorporating that philosophy into their teaching than whether they have a certain buzzword in their marketing brochure.

To choose a good preschool, after narrowing down several that fit your budget, schedule, and commute, schedule a tour. During your visit, talk to the teachers and staff. Observe closely to see if they meet the criteria in the next section.

Preschool, here we come! Here is a comprehensive guide of 21 traditional and progressive preschools in San Juan.

What you can read in this article:

  • Preschool requirements
  • How to choose a school that is right for your child
  • Preschool guide: 16 traditional and progressive preschools in San Juan

  • 1×1 photo of the child
  • Accomplished Application Form from school
  • Other requirements from the school

How to choose a school that is right for your child?

Parents should choose a preschool based on the quality of the teachers, the policy enforced by the preschool director, resources, the overall environment, and fit for your child, not so much on its written education philosophy.

Oftentimes, when you talk to preschool directors, you will find that they like to emphasize their education method. Parents are therefore led to believe that they should pick the right preschool based on the marketed philosophy.

However, preschools do not need any accreditation to use the names of those education methods. Subscribing to a philosophy does not guarantee it will deliver the same type or the same quality across the board.

Observe closely to see if they meet the criteria for the people you want your child to be surrounded with on his early years.

Thinking about homeschooling? 3 benefits of the Charlotte Mason method

$

Home-based Learning (HBL) turned out to be the need of the hour amidst the pandemic, and parents had a challenging time ensuring kids are able to catch up with their online classes, assignments and homework, despite all the distractions.

What can you read in this article?

  • What is the Charlotte Mason Method?
  • Charlotte Mason Principles: Living Education
  • The Charlotte Mason Homeschooling Timetable
  • Pros and Cons of following the Charlotte Mason Principles

However, parents who’ve been homeschooling children for a while understood these complexities and were better prepared to handle kids.

While most parents will be happy for kids to go back to school once things go back to normal, there are those as well who will continue to prefer homeschooling.

For parents looking at homeschooling their children, there are many methods to choose from. Since you do not need to replicate the classroom at home, you get the option to pick and choose the salient bits that help you educate your child.

One of the more common methods for homeschooling are the Charlotte Mason principles.

She was a British educator in the nineteenth century and had a different approach towards education– emphasising good habits and noble ideas.

But how does the Charlotte Mason method work and how does it help with your child’s education? We break it down for you.

What is the Charlotte Mason Method?

The Charlotte Mason method believes that we should educate an individual as a whole and not just their mind. Mason believed that education is three-pronged – atmosphere, discipline and life.

  • Mason said that a child absorbs a lot from their home environment with the parents contributing one-third to the child’s education, thus referring to the atmosphere.
  • With respect to discipline, Charlotte said that cultivating good habits in your child made up another one-third of their education.
  • The final one-third came from life itself. She believed that educators should give children living thoughts and ideas, and not just facts.

Charlotte Mason Principles: Living Education

Learning is an ongoing process and does not stop with schooling. Charlotte believed that it was a lifestyle with its own built-in reward.

It is as much about parents nurturing their kids’ education, as it is about kids making the effort to learn and self-educate.

Living Books

Charlotte believed in living books rather than standard textbooks. These are books that are well-written and have a story or a narrative that the writer is passionate about. This makes the book come alive.

By reading such books, students surround themselves with vivid writings that evoke emotion and draw the reader to the story. So, for students wanting to learn different subjects, living books examples include:

  • History: Using biographies, source documents, well-written history books, which students learn in chronological order.
  • Languages: Students learn about a language through narration, copy work and dictation.
  • Science: Students learn about science by nature study and as a means to know and come close to God.

Creating the right atmosphere

The method emphasises creating the right environment for learning. This includes exposing kids to great music, art, literature and nature.

It also encourages children to use their leisure time to engage in an activity like knitting, needlework, woodworking or beading.

Mason also believed that the secret to life is that ‘everything is connected,’ and the child makes the connections for themselves based on their learnings. Charlotte was a woman of deep faith and had a Christian worldview.

She believed that education enriches our relationship with God, as well as ourselves, ideas, work and creation. Having said that, her principles are also adopted by those from different faiths.

Following the Charlotte Mason Principles

why is it easier for a child to learn a second language

Here are some more details you should know about following the Charlotte Mason principles:

  • The Charlotte Mason method delays formal education till the age of six years until the child is developmentally ready.
  • Children use living books at any age instead of compartmentalising them on a grade level.
  • Students need to recite and narrate what they read in the books in their own words to ensure they’ve grasped the concept.
  • Students need not take tests like match the following or multiple-choice responses. Instead, they need to explain what they’ve learnt by reading the living books by making a co-relating the books with their mind.
  • Instead of the standard way of teaching handwriting skills, the Charlotte Mason principles use passages from great books that communicate ideas and not just words.
  • The copy work also doubles up as handwriting practice while providing attention to grammar and sentence structure.
  • The method also encourages spending more time outdoors and learning the ways of nature.
  • Children get exposed to a number of books from different sources including Shakespeare and the Bible from a young age while emphasising full attention that helps children remember things.
  • The method also removes unnecessary repetition and homework.

The Charlotte Mason Homeschooling Timetable

The Charlotte Mason principles stress the importance of spending time outdoors as much as indoors between books. They also try to use interesting learning materials instead of using books that are only objective and boring.

The method recommends completing the academics in the morning and then involve more physical activity in the afternoon in the child’s schedule. Here’s what an average Charlotte Mason homeschooling day would look like:

  • 9.00-9.20 am – Math
  • 9.20-9.40 am – Handwriting
  • 9.40-10.00 am – History
  • 10.00-11.00 am – Read aloud literature
  • 11.00-12.00 noon – Lunch
  • 12.00 noon – Drill
  • 12.20-12.40 pm – Science
  • 12.40-1.00 pm – Grammar
  • 1.00-1.20 pm – Latin or music or art appreciation or poetry or P.E.
  • 1.20-2.00 pm – Map Work and read-aloud work by children

Reserve afternoons after nature trails and spending time outdoors.

charlotte mason principles

Pros of following the Charlotte Mason Principles

  • It allows students to be creative, expressive with an emphasis on arts.
  • Lessons are short in the morning and children have more time to play and learn throughout the rest of the day.
  • The Charlotte Mason method does not have any tests. Students need to narrate, dictate and discuss each topic.

Cons of following the Charlotte Mason Principles

  • Parents need to buy a variety of living books and more to teach children under this method.
  • These books can get too expensive, especially the good ones.
  • Daily walks and nature trails may not be feasible every day.
  • It may pull the student out of regular learning channels too much.
  • It pays little emphasis on higher education.

Applying the Charlotte Mason method is a personal choice and completely depends on how you can make it more attractive for your child’s educational needs. You can also mix it up with traditional education methods to keep your child ready for higher education and future goals.

School photo created by freepik – www.freepik.com

5 ways to make English Grammar easier to learn for kids

Languages get more interesting the more you understand and learn about them. And for that, you need to learn grammar. But it’s not the most likable subject when it comes to children.

What can you read in this article?

  • 5 ways to make English Grammar easier to learn for kids
  • What you should remember when teaching grammar to kids

You see, any language can be difficult when you don’t understand how grammar works. It’s essentially what helps you to communicate better.

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, all are essentially the science behind the language and bring coherence to what you want to say.

To be honest, there’s something oddly satisfying about a well-constructed sentence. You know when all the words just come together to tell a story, joke, or change minds. It’s just a different kind of therapy.

For that to happen,  your foundation needs to be strong. Grammar is that basic principle upon which you build any language. The earlier you start teaching it to kids, the better it will be for them to organize sentences in the right way.

It will give children better written and spoken skills, while also encouraging them to have a better vocabulary.

And so, here are seven ways you can make grammar for kids simpler and more fun at home.

1. Teaching pronouns

He, her, they, them, and it, are examples of pronouns. Instead of using the boring way to teach pronouns that can be confusing on a beginner’s level, you can make this process a lot more fun.

One of the fun ways to teach pronouns is in the form of a story.

  • Fairy tales are a great way to teach kids about grammar.
  • Try and use a story that has lots of characters that bring up several pronouns for the kids to spot.
  • Turn this into a game and keep score every time your child gets a pronoun right.
  • Reward them with a cookie or something extremely small in order to encourage them at the end of the story.
  • Every time you play this game, the goal should be to score better than the previous story.

2. Teaching conjunctions

Conjunctions are words that connect two sentences together. There are seven basic coordinating conjunctions that include for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. You can see why this can be confusing to identify for kids.

Instead, make this into a fun activity by turning it into a ‘rotate the wheel’ game with the different conjunctions written on it.

  • You read out or write a sentence on the board that’s missing conjunctions.
  • The child then needs to rotate the wheel and select the conjunction that they think fits well in the blank space.
  • If the sentence is “I will finish playing now ____ complete my homework later.” The child needs to rotate the wheel to select “and” or “then” (depending on the grammar level you are teaching).
  • Keep score and see the excitement rise with every round.
  • Add more complex sentences once the child gets the hang of it.

3. Teaching verbs

Verbs are words that describe an action. So, words like jump, fly, run, exist, guess, are all examples of verbs because they describe an action that’s being carried out.

Teaching verbs to kids is extremely fun because you can transform them into a complete physical activity. And a great way to do it is by playing a game of “Simon Says!”

  • Think of a few verbs or action words that children can follow.
  • You can then tell them “Simon says jump,” or, “Simon says rollover.”
  • The aspect of conducting the action while learning about verbs will reinforce the concept in the child’s mind.
  • Not just grammar for kids but this helps them understand other activities too in a better way.

4. Teaching adjectives

Adjectives are words that describe a noun or a pronoun. Words like “old” man, “cheerful” teenager, “green” car are all examples of adjectives.

They add more detail to the individual or object and is an extremely important communication skill.

One of the best ways to encourage and teach children to learn and use adjectives is by playing “Show and Tell.”

  • Tell the child to bring a toy, pet, fruit, or household item of their choice.
  • The child then needs to describe what they like about that particular item using as many adjectives as possible.
  • You need to note down all the adjectives they used for each of the objects.
  • Kids can also talk about their friends, siblings, or other family members and use different adjectives for them.

5. Teaching adverbs

An adverb modifies a verb or a complete sentence to describe an event. So, in a sentence like “Usain ran badly in the race,” the word “badly” is modified from bad and describes how the runner fared in the race.

In the same way, the sentence, “That building is extremely tall” has the word “extremely” that further describes what makes the building different.

This can be a tricky lot and does need some practice to get it right.

Once your kids understand what are adverbs, you can try fun ways to emphasize their usage in a sentence. And the best way to do it is to use them in sentences that kids will use and say on a daily basis.

  • Ask children to think of a fun activity that they like to do. For instance, playing video games, sports, art and craft, and more.
  • Then ask kids to think of an adverb that further describes that activity to another person.
  • You can start with an example like, “I easily exercise at least once daily.” Here the words easily and daily are the adverbs.
  • Now, ask kids to make their own sentences using different adverbs. They can write one sentence per activity.
  • Ask the kids to recite what they’ve written. You can always correct them if they go wrong.

What you should remember when teaching grammar to kids

 1. Use visual cues

Add charts, colors, and arrows as much as possible to your teaching process. The more visual cues you use to emphasize different aspects of grammar, the faster they will be able to pick on it.

2. Enforce the right sentence construction

Kids need to learn about creating the written order for words to comprehend what they want to say.

You can also conduct this in a fun activity by writing the words of a sentence on different pieces of paper and then ask the kids to bring it together to make a sentence.

3. Break it down

Grammar for kids isn’t complicated but it can be confusing. That’s why you need to break it down into simpler terms.

For instance, teaching about companion friends, let the kids learn about them as “little friends” that accompany a larger word.

So adding a, an, the, before, and after a word would be the little friends in any sentence. Similarly, adding an adverb or adjective is necessary to describe that object more effectively.

4. Recognising patterns

Grammar is all about learning a pattern of writing or speaking words in a particular order. It’s all about learning that pattern and that will only come from reading as often as possible.

Let your child read books as often as possible. But also encourage them to read billboards, store names, and other literary work in and around them that further enforces the language.

5. Synonyms and antonyms are important

Once you’ve managed to get the basics of grammar right, your next step needs to be expanding your child’s vocabulary. So don’t limit them to just one word to describe something.

Explain the concept of synonyms and antonyms that encourage them to find different words to describe the same things.

A wider vocabulary will only help them to expand their mental horizon when it comes to languages and turn them into better writers.
